obit corlissEdwina Mae Corliss

Edwina Mae Corliss, 76, of Sheffield died at her home on Sunday morning, October 25, 2015.

She was born on April 14, 1939, in Topsham, daughter to the late John E. and Beatrice Mae (Currier) Jenkins. She grew up in Lyndon and graduated from the Lyndon Institute with the Class of 1957.

She married Myron A. Corliss in 1958. They shared 57 years together, living in Sheffield for the past 50 in their home. She worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Sheffield for 30 years, and was postmaster for the last 13 years when she retired.

Ms. Corliss loved flowers and in her spare time she tended her flower gardens religiously. She loved to go berry picking and didn’t mind driving her car through a thicket to do so. She was involved in 4-H for many years. She was a foster parent and dearly loved her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her beloved husband; her son Clifford and his wife, Rachel, of Lyndon Center, and their children: Chelsey Corliss, Cameron Corliss, and Clifford’s son Eric Corliss and his wife, Destiny; her daughter Colleen Bowen and her husband, Ted, of Newark, and her children: Lindsay Miller and husband, Donald, Devin Carten and her husband, Matthew, and Nicholas Thompson; and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her foster son Timothy DeGreenia and his wife, Janet, of Windsor Locks, Connecticut, and their sons: Timothy and Tyler DeGreenia.

Funeral services were held on Friday, October 30, at the Guibord Funeral Home with the Reverend Ann Hockridge officiating. Burial followed at the Newark Cemetery in Newark. The family had a celebration of life at the Town Hall in Sheffield after the graveside services.

obit GradyJohn F. Grady

John F. Grady, 59, of Newport died there suddenly on October 29, 2015.

He was born on May 23, 1956, in Springfield to Arthur and Ella (Wheeler) Grady.

Among his hobbies, he enjoyed fishing, and watching wrestling on television. He was a collector of Matchbox cars.

He worked for several years at Ethan Allen in Island Pond.

He is survived by his siblings: Tom Grady and his wife, Sandra, of Newport, James Grady and his wife, Joann, of West Burke, and Barbara Choiniere of Abbyville, South Carolina; and by his sister-in-law Bonnie Lewis of Alpine, New York.

He was predeceased by his brother Roy H. Lewis; and his parents.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in St. Johnsbury, with the Reverend Douglas Carter officiating.

Elizabeth L. (Savage) March

Elizabeth L. (Savage) March, 89, died on Monday, October 26, 2015, at her home in Newport. Her children and daughter-in-law were by her side when she peacefully and comfortably passed.

She was born on April 13, 1926, in Newport. Ms. March, or “E,” as she was affectionately called by everyone, was the daughter of Bernard and Ruby (Calkins) Savage.

She married Andrew Sumner March, who she met in Newport, in April 1951. Mr. March predeceased her in August 2014. They were married for 63 years.

She spent her final years in the town she loved most, Newport, where she lived through high school. She then went on to live and work in Boston, attending Fisher Junior College. During her marriage to Mr. March, Ms. March also lived in Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Illinois, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. But Newport is where she had many of her fondest memories. And she was able to be amongst many of the friends and family she loved most in those final years.

Ms. March is survived by two sons: Andrew March and his wife, Mary Lou, of Cape Coral, Florida and Newport, and Douglas March and his wife, Carol, of Warwick, Rhode Island; her daughter Susan Pelcher of Newport; her brother Bruce Savage of Sandwich, Massachusetts;  five grandchildren: Lindsay, Whitney, Corey, Amy, and Lindsay; her great-grandson, who was born in April 2015; and her several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Family and friends of the family attended the graveside ceremony at Pine Grove Cemetery on Saturday, October 31, in Newport.

obit NilesDouglas G. Niles

Douglas G. Niles, 66, of Newport Center died peacefully on Monday, October 26, 2015, with his loving family at his side.

He was born on May 20, 1949, in Newport, the son of Lorraine (Davio) Niles and the late George Bixby Niles.

He graduated from North Country Union High School, class of 1968, and later received an associate degree in forestry in 1970 from College of the Redwoods in Eureka, California.

He owned Niles Tree Service, where he was a landscaper and was well known for craftsmanship of building stonewalls.

He enjoyed the great outdoors of Vermont where he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his daughters: Tammi Lantagne and her husband, Reg, of Newport Center, and Tara Selby and her husband, Sean, of Morgan; his mother Lorraine Niles of Newport Center; his grandchildren: Alexis and Kevin Lantagne, and Dija and Kristchan Selby; his brothers: Raymond Niles and his wife, Edna, of Littleton, Timothy Niles of Newport Center, and Kevin Niles and his wife, Julie, of Lockport; and his nieces and nephews: Kate Schwanke and her husband, Matt, Bryce Niles and his wife, Tabi, Shane Niles and Dana Niles and his wife, Nancy, T.J. Niles, Darcel and Yolanda Niles, Jordan and Mitchell Niles.

obit welchGordon Cargill Welch

Gordon Cargill Welch, 86, died on Wednesday, October 28, 2015, surrounded by loving family after a short illness.

Mr. Welch was born on June 18, 1929, to his late parents Frank and Alice (Cargill) Welch of Island Pond.

He graduated from Brighton High School in Island Pond in 1946. He married his loving wife of 60 years, Marjorie Driver, on September 10, 1955. Together in their loving home they raised three children.

Mr. Welch was employed at First National Stores for 33 years. For the next ten years he worked at Brandon training school and finally retired from the Vermont Veterans Home.

He was an active member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and became a member of Lodge #13 in Island Pond. For the Odd Fellows, he served as district deputy grand master and grand chair for Christian education.

He later taught Sunday school for many years at the Second Congregational Church in Bennington, was on the board of trustees, and served as a deacon.

For the last 34 years, Mr. Welch was a member of the Mount Moriah Lodge #96 F&AM in East Wallingford.

During retirement he enjoyed his family, gardening, listening to Red Sox games, and playing cards.

Mr. Welch is survived by his wife, Marjorie Welch, of Rutland; two sons: Dean Welch and his wife, Sandra, of Bennington, and Donald Welch and his wife, Susan, of Arlington; his daughter Debora Buck and her husband, Allen, of Underhill; his grandchildren: David Welch, Ashley Welch, Adam Welch, Andrew Welch and his wife, Lorianne, Amber Welch, Jessica Buck and her fiancé, Jonathan Cullen, and Benjamin Buck; and his great-grandson Kavern Wilcox.

He was predeceased by his sister Georgia Hatch.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to Bridges and Beyond, 160 Allen Street, Rutland, Vermont 05701.

There was a service in his memory on Saturday, October 31, at Tossing Funeral Home in Rutland.
